I cannot believe the low ratings for this book. It is another Abbott tour de force. Here, we have an 'almost murder' and less of the disturbing family relations found in some of her other recent work (not that those works bother me). Family matters, here, more because of what might be called 'background damage' to a couple of girls, but they appear to be survivors. Young love and sexuality are, again, front and center, but so are the twisted relationships between girls on the cusp of adulthood. There is also a real mystery in this book, and I found the reveal deeply suprising.Tags : The Fever [Megan Abbott] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The panic unleashed by a mysterious contagion threatens the bonds of family and community in a seemingly idyllic suburban community. The Nash family is close-knit. 3 friends growing up and POV’s from Parents, brothers about their experiences with women.
Also an attempted murder over a crush and mistaken perceptions or is it just a psychology classmate? Did it happen or was it a mental thing? So many kids with broken families. I feel like this book tried to tackle one too many themes and got jumbled. I’m confused and not sure about the events or the ending. It was thoughtful and heartfelt though.
This book was fair. Megan Abbott is a good writer. I know teen girls can be bitchy, and attention-seeking, and downright mean; and I see that in this book. The meanness goes pretty far. I didn't like how the kids in the story have so much freedom. Leaving school whenever it suits them. Seriously? What school does that happen in? Parents aren't called when kids leave school? Not where I live. They girls also seem to have a lot of freedom at home. It doesn't seem like anyone is overly worried about how late they are out, or where they go. Which is too weird for me, having raised two daughters. That being said, I couldn't wait to see what was really going on with the girls. It did hold my attention. But, there were some shades of the Salem witch trials in my mind
I read The Fever after reading The End Of Everything. The latter novel set a bar very high. It was deep, disturbing, and great. The Fever was good, not great. I did not feel emotionally invested in the characters. There’s nothing formulaic about Abbott, whose other novels I’m excited to read, but this one left me a little empty, unsatiated. The chapters are very short and truncated, too much so. The plot is absorbing, but the answers to the mystery, for me, felt a bit far-fetched. I was glad to be done with the novel—although at no point was I inclined to put it down. I’m onto a new one.
Megan Abbott's teen novels are not for the faint of heart. I first became aware of how much I liked her books with "Dare Me," which was a wild ride.
This new book, "The Fever," carries many of the Abbott-perks (quirks?). She does not shy away from teen sex, disturbing as these sexting/anything-goes teens may take things.
In The Fever, we meet Deenie and her brother, hunky Eli. Deenie and her friends are just beginning to explore their sexual feelings and fantasies. Deenie is closest to Gabby, and she is distressed when Gabby begins sharing more time and more secrets with Lise. Lise is one of those girls who has blossomed over a summer from a pudgy, sweet kid into a sex kitten. And then there's the newcomer, Skye, with her mysterious household and sexual experience.
Deenie and Eli are in their father's custody. He's doing the best he can. He teaches at their school, which helps somewhat, but he's still feeling the pain of his wife's messy affair and leave-taking. The kids are suffering emotionally.
But this is Meg Abbott so a mixed-up home-life is the norm. The girls at school begin falling victim to convulsions. There are rumors flying it's from the HPV shots; it's from a sexual disease (blame it on all those randy boys!). The hysteria of the parents would be comical if it weren't so close to the truth as parents demand answers when there are none. From PTA meetings to classrooms to clandestine visits to the hospital rooms, everything and everyone is suspected. The polluted lake? The chemicals in the schools? Drugs dropped into drinks at parties?
It's a mad, mad world that the police and health officials must crack before the entire school succumbs. Rumors and innuendos cause as much damage as the fever. A smart, sharp look at the "blame somebody" culture, THE FEVER reminds us that we are not so socially advanced from the Salem Witch Trials as we may believe we are. Although some reviewers have felt the teachers at the school look inept and dispassionate, I sympathized with their efforts to calm the waters of kids caught up in the excitement of tragedy exacerbated by cell phones and texts. The bad cell reception at the school seems like a gift under the circumstances there.
