This is my all-time favorite gift for a newborn grand-daughter (mine, for instance), and almost as perfect a gift for a kindergarten girl or one in that lanky-legged state of growth just before they discover boys aren't as totally icky at they previously thought.

Neil Gaiman writes great sci-fi and fantasy books, but I find his books for young people are often unknown and under-appreciated. Blueberry Girl is delightful, and Charles Vess's illustrations could not be better suited to the text. Just one caveat: no matter how much you love your Kindle, this book really, really should be given as the wonderful hardback it was designed to be.

It's tough to put Gaiman in a specific category. He's written children's books, adult fiction, graphic novels, fantasy, horror, comedy, many different genres. Just when you think you have him pinned, along comes something like Blueberry Girl. It's short - perfect to read to my daughter, now 2 years old. Beautifully illustrated by Charles Vess which blends with the text so naturally that the book seems to sing to you as you turn each page. He has written down, in words what I could never hope to articulate on my own, my own hopes and dreams for my daughter. Gaiman has a habit of doing that - writing things from my own heart. Given that I've never met the man, it would be unnerving, were I not so grateful for his talent. If you want to put Gaiman into a genre or category, make it the "must read" category. If you have a daughter, sister, niece or even a family friend who has one, get Blueberry Girl. Please.
I'm a long-time fan of Neil Gaiman, and I'm pretty sure I've read every bit of his work (at least, every bit that's been published). Some of the things written for kids is kind of abstract and, frankly, odd, but I enjoy them -- my daughter, on the other hand, does not. Blueberry girl, however, she loves. It has a wonderful message, it has a lovely ebb and flow to the rhyme. It's actually the second book my daughter ever read aloud to me, and hearing her reading "Ladies of paradox..." was so awesome...

The artwork is great, too. The whole thing is beautiful.

I've now bought multiple copies of this book, because I buy a copy for all of my friends who have a young daughter (although it's been pointed out that I should give this book to all parents). I love it.
This book was a gift to my granddaughter. She is three years old, and she has the stages of her life to live. This book by Neil Gaiman is a precious gift from me to her.

Girls who grow to women, everyone goes through these levels, some levels are from the other place, and some are from Heaven. Each of us remembers our journey, and as mothers, grandmothers and aunts we want the best for our girls. The lovely illustrations by Charles Vess are so necessary to the feeling that the book describes. This is a book for all women from birth to death, there is a lot of wisdom imparted in these lyrical phrases. We want our Ladies to be kind and full of grace and favor. We want our ladies to be full of joy and have little sorrow. Truth she must find in herself. This lyrical lullaby poem fashions a lovely view of the growth of a girl into a woman. For every woman to read and to savor.

I've only recently discovered Neil Gaiman, but have quickly become an avid reader and fan. I originally purchased this book for my son (3), who was affectionately known as "Blueberry Baby" prior to his birth. While the book is targeted towards girls, the story is just as meaningful for a boy and my son loves it when I substitute "boy" for "girl". The illustrations are lush and sweet, the story is empowering and lovely. I'll be purchasing this book for all my friends who have girls.
This children's book is absolutely gorgeous. The illustrations by Charles Vess are delicate and whimsical, offering a ton of diversity in the characters to delight a wide variety of readers. Neil Gaiman's writing, as per usual, is stellar. This reads almost like a lullaby to a young daughter, however even as an "older" daughter I was extremely touched and pleased with this book. Highly recommended for readers of all ages despite being a picture book.
The illustrations were gorgeous and the writing was beautiful (as expected!). The text is lovely, empowering but not trite or cliched. The book has a lovely message for those wishing well to a young girl, invoking a "higher power" of sorts without veering into overly preachy or witchy territory (I'm agnostic & a feminist, I bought this for the daughter of my very traditional, Catholic sister). I will definitely purchase another copy for goodnight stories via Facetime and for my own collection of Neil Gaiman works.
We absolutely love this book! Neil Gaiman is my favorite author for the sci-fi/ fantasy/ fiction genre and seeing how much my daughter loves this book, I’m now falling in love with his kids books as well. He just has such a way with words and the poem in Blueberry Girl is so sweet, rhythmic, and speaks to what any parent would want for their child... for them to grow up happy, strong, to be able to learn from mistakes, and most of all for them to come into their own and be themselves. We even bought a copy for a friend’s baby shower gift. Beautiful poem, highly recommend!
