Guilty Pleasures Guilty Series Laura Lee Guhrke 9780060541743 Books
Sweet story of the daughter of an antique specialist that ends up employed by a beautiful and distant Duke to restore some archeological pieces being excavated in his estate.Although he barely notes her existence, she cannot help but get hopelessly infatuated and as a result, she can hardly talk in his presence and she works like a dog trying to please him.
One day she overhears a conversation between him and his sister in which he compares her to a stick bug and says she is so unremarkable that she blends with the wallpaper. He also says he will marry a daughter of a marquess only for duty and heirs.
Hurt beyond measure, she decides to quit her employment and go to London to find a husband or a position as a governess.
Unaccustomed to hear “no” and worried about his restorations and the museum he will soon open with them, Anthony starts to try to convince Daphne to stay.
Cute read! The book slows a little at the end, but I could not put it down and I read it almost in one seating.

Guilty Pleasures Guilty Series Laura Lee Guhrke 9780060541743 Books Reviews
The tendency in Guhrke's novels is for the ending to sneak up on the reader, with all the conflict between the principles being magically resolved through actions that are out of character, and without really addressing the deeper psychological flaws that kept them apart in the first place. "Guilty Pleasures", in contrast, sustained the tension, fun, and believability of the story straight through to the end. Daphne and Anthony each had their own evolution of character, and their relationship evolved accordingly.
Contains sexual content that is easily skipped through
The characters are wonderful and each has their own character arc. The secondary characters are wonderful and three dimensional.
The highlight of this book is timing. When the hero realizes his feelings are deeper. It's a gradual build. If you are a writer, I think it would be a good book to reread and study. If you are reader, you are in for a treat.
Highly recommended
The title says it all. Dishes and Laundry took a back seat to this book. It was just a good thing I had left overs in the fridge because there was no cooking going on in my house.
Daphne is a 24 year old woman who has lived her life wanting to please others. First it was her father. She sacrificed simple comforts to learn his trade and she learned how to excel at it. Then it became essential to win admiration from the Duke of Tremore...be careful what you wish for.
Five months into working for the Duke of Tremore she is swept away by him, randomly glancing through a brass spyglass to catch a glimpse of Anthony's bare chest. The duke doesn't see her for the woman she is, in fact, no one does. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that so much of her life has been spent in a tent working on clay pots.
The first heart wrenching parts in the book came when Daphne hears Anthony's description of her and you can just feel this poor girls world just crash down around her. Everything she has believed is questioned as the tears flow all night long. The story then becomes this magnificent tale of Daphne who begins to learn about herself and what she wants. Instead of being hunched over a mosaic she is experiencing life and her role in it.
Anthony is just left scratching his head because, literally, over night she is so changed and he can't believe how he has never really seen her before. She is an Intelligent, outspoken, beautiful woman and he can't get passed his own blindness. This may sound familiar but what I liked was the authors approach.
The duke is self absorbed and obnoxious but gets a rude awakening when Daphne hands him her resignation. He is shady as you don't really know if what he says is being truthful or an attempt to get what he wants. That brings us to the second heart wrenching part of the book and that was Anthony's reason for all the walls. I found both experiences to be very tearful moments but it brought things all together.
There are a couple of love scenes that happen before they lay all their cards on the table and that bothered me at first because honesty is important to me but the way it is written I could believe the passion they shared that it could happen. I can believe that a woman fixated on the same man could easily give into her weakness. She has bottled up her feelings for so long and felt left out and he made her feel whole and as an attractive woman for the first time in her life. She was finally doing what pleased her and not the other way around.
If I had one complaint to make it was Anthony's mistress. She is mentioned but is really of no significance to the book. Why mention her but never bring her into the story itself? Not that I wanted her in it. The book became my guilty pleasure and rewarded with five stars.
One of my all-time favorite books. The Princess Diaries of historicals. Shy quiet nerdy Wallflower comes into her own and her wit charms all.I have read this book twice over the years and what I like most about it is that, after overhearing what the hero says about her, the heroine truly lets go of her infatuation, reassesses her priorities in life, and sets about changing it. She has been restoring Roman treasures at his English estate and, now that he has realized what a treasure she is, he has to set about restoring her love for him. One of the first romance books I read that involved the language of flowers. Her botanical reply to his is great. One of my all-time favorites a must-read for anyone with a romantic heart and looking for something a little different than the typical Regency romances out there.
