Wealthy and somewhat naive, suffragette Grace Mabry is dedicated to her country during WWI, even to the point of handing out white feathers signifying cowardice to men like Jack Benningham, heir to the Earl of Stonebrook. While Jack may seem like a man using conscientious objector status in order to eat, drink and be merry, in actuality he's working undercover for the Crown tracking down German spies. Their first meeting sets off a chain of events that leads to life-altering consequences for both of them.

I really enjoyed how I was completely immersed in the time period and setting during this story. Kate Breslin added just enough details to make me feel like I was there without bogging the story down and it made me interested in how the women of that time coped with all that was going on around them. Grace was so earnest and likable, I couldn't help but want her to succeed. Jack was a little more difficult for me to relate to, but I did understand his motives and I liked how he valued Grace. The mystery part of the book wasn't very mysterious at all, it was pretty obvious from early on what was happening, although the reason was a revelation I wasn't expecting.

The writing was very good and the spiritual thread was sincere and realistic without being heavy handed. There was a wonderful message about God's presence in the midst of suffering that was woven throughout the story.

This is an informative and heartfelt historical romance that speaks to the value of family and the presence of God in seemingly impossible situations.

Kate Breslin is a wonderfully talented author. Her novel, “Not by Sight” was one that I was not able to stop reading until the end. I stayed up far too late for a couple of evenings because each page-turn brought more curiosity about what would happen next. There was also the hint of danger and espionage along with the story of the Women’s Land Army of WWI. I was intrigued by these women who did their part for the war effort by doing back-breaking farming work to free up the men to fight…very well researched and presented.

In this novel Grace has no use for conscientious objectors who will not join up. She is particularly frustrated and angry at Jack Bellingham, a supposed rake and rogue who plots to avoid joining up, when Grace’s brother Colin is fighting in the trenches. Unbeknownst to Grace, Jack is a part of the war effort, not just in the way she thinks he should be. I am not going to go into the description of the plot of this story because I don’t want to spoil it for future readers. Just know that I will pounce on any book written by Kate Breslin. She always gives the reader great characters, great plots, great word images to go along with the story so that you feel a part of it.
*applauds* Well done, Ms. Breslin, well done! I just don't even know where to start with describing this gem.

I guess we can start off with the cover first. Oh. My. Goodness. It is just beyond gorgeous! Talk about design goals! The fonts, the colors, the arrangement, just everything is so perfect and so beautiful. I can't wait till I have a gorgeous paperback to grace my bookshelves.

The characters. Grace is an incredibly multifaceted character. I was a little wary at first, as she is a very outspoken suffragette, but thankfully it wasn't as much in the story as I anticipated. I particularly related to her close relationship with her brother and her desire to help him, even if some of her actions weren't the best, the heart was right. And Jack. <3 He was amazing. I've found a lot of romance novels to surround the female being insecure about herself, and the guy helping her overcome that, but it was really intriguing that in this one, the guy was insecure. Their story and character arcs were so well done.

The romance was without a doubt, the best part of this book for me. I love, love loved how it was almost entirely focused on a personal\heart attraction as opposed to a physical attraction that is often portrayed in so many romance novels. Due to certain circumstances that I can say (#spoilers), the characters had to dig deeper, instead of focusing on physical characteristics and attraction. It was just so good, okay?

The plot was incredibly well done, and especially towards the end, I couldn't put the book down! The ending was beautiful and had me sobbing. The WWI setting was absolutely amazing, as I expected.

All in all, this was a phenomenal novel, and I cannot wait to read more by this incredibly author! Definitely go grab yourself a copy of this beautiful piece of literature!
